In 2009, Tri Pointe Homes, Inc. was founded in Irving, California by Mike Grubbs, Doug Bauer, and Tom Mitchell. Starwood Capital initially partnered with the new company and invested $150 million in private equity. Tri Pointe Homes home building company constructs townhomes, luxury single-family homes, apartments, and commercial buildings. Operating in 10 Western and Southern states. In addition to new home construction, the company offers insurance services and financing to homebuyers.

Tri Pointe became a publicly traded company in January of 2013. Tri Pointe merged with Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Company in 2014 and acquired the following subsidiary companies:

• Maracay Homes – Scottsdale Arizona
• Pardee Homes – Nevada and California
• Quadrant Homes – Bellevue, Washington 
• Trendmaker Homes – Houston, Texas
• Winchester Homes – Bethesda, Maryland

After the merger, the company rebranded as TRI Pointe Group Inc. and the name Tri Pointe Homes became a subsidiary. 

In January 2021, TRI Pointe Group once again changed its corporate name and rebranded all of its subsidiaries under the Tri Pointe Homes, Inc name.

As of January 2021, Tri Pointe is the 16th-largest homebuilder in the United States.
